I Was on a Podcast: Talking to higher ed social About Work-life Balance or Lack Thereof

Screen shot 2015-01-28 at 8.15.06 AMI was so excited to get a message from Jackie Vetrano, half of the higher ed social podcast team, inviting me to be a guest on their show.

Jackie mentioned that, aside from my work at Elizabethtown College, she was struck by what I do with Hippocampus Magazine, and, now, the creative nonfiction conference, HippoCamp.

I had a blast talking to Jackie and Lougan Bishop — I know both in real life through HigherEdWeb — about how I (try) to do it all. I made some puns. I revealed some vulnerabilities. And I gave some insight into how I’m handling email addiction.

So many of us in higher ed marketing/web/social/content are one-person shops or part of very small teams. This means we, more than other campus peers, likely find it hard to tune out when we leave the office. I’ve struggled with doing a great job and still living a good life outside of my career, and, starting in 2014, I tried to get better at balance and saying “no” and, in 2015, I am making a lot more progress. This podcast was good timing for me. Talking about this makes it real. And sharing my experiences (and Jackie and Lougan shared their foes too, binge-watching TV and video games, respectively), I think, will definitely help others in our boat!

Listen now to episode #6, which debuted Jan.28.

(Past episodes include other higher ed rock stars, including Dave Tyler and Todd Sanders.)
